PROS AND CONS:
The Cuisinart TOB-40 custom classic toaster oven comes with a number of convenient features. The Function Dial allows the user to select a cooking method. The Toast Shade Dial can be set at light, medium, or dark. The Always On button can be chosen to let the food cook until the toaster oven is shut off manually. The Start/Stop button is pushed to begin the Toast or Bagel function, then pushed again to stop toasting in mid-cycle or to shut off the appliance. The indicator light remains on while the oven is in use. This item is easy to clean. The user should allow the unit to cool completely before cleaning. After greasy foods are cooked, the top of the interior should be wiped to keep the toaster oven working consistently. Crumbs are removed by sliding out the crumb tray, discarding the crumbs, wiping off the tray, then replacing it. The crumb tray, wire rack, and baking pan are all dishwasher-safe. If grease is baked on, the tray can be soaked in warm soapy water, or scrubbed with a nonabrasive cleaner. The biggest downside with the Cuisinart TOB-40 is the heat. There is no insulation; only a thin metal sheet enclosing elements that can heat up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The top and sides can get quite hot. Users, especially elderly persons or children, should beware of touching the unit and getting burned. Although this model carries a three-year warranty, the elements may develop hot spots after one or two years, and overheat. Consumers should take care to watch for elements splitting and wearing out. In addition, after months of regular use, the teflon on the back of the interior may start to peel. There is no timer, so food must be watched so as not to overcook. If you want to check out a toaster oven that has a timer, try the Black & Decker TO1303SB 4-Slice Toaster Oven and see if it is a better fit.
