PROS AND CONS:
The Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven contains many of the same features as the larger Breville toaster oven, but it takes up less space, and preheats faster. The quartz heating elements respond quickly to changes in heat, resulting in even cooking. The back-lit easy-to-read LCD calculates the correct time and temperature for the food. This oven can be used alone, as for apartment living, or with a traditional oven for a busy family. Unlike many other toaster ovens which don't distribute heat consistently, the Breville BOV450XL adjusts the heat distribution according to the type and volume of food to be cooked. It can also adjust the wattage for peak efficiency. The Element IQ, like a dimmer switch, allows the user to increase or decrease power with a simple turn of the knob. The preset feature makes it easy to cook without guessing the correct settings, although the consumer can also customize the settings for a particular recipe or food. The bit more button is convenient for cooking the food just a little while longer. The BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven can accommodate a 9x9 baking pan, a round cake pan, or pie plate, but not a whole chicken, as this would come into contact with the top inside. Salmon, however, can be broiled in it, as well as chicken breasts, hamburgers, and fish filets. A few concerns: The rack doesn't slide out when the door is opened, so a potholder is needed. The buzzer announcing the end of the preheat time is very loud. Once the unit is preheated, the food must be put in immediately, as the cooking countdown begins right away. The handle is rather large, sticking out and taking up space. The top and sides scratch easily, so nothing can be placed on top of the unit when it's hot. There is no insulation, so the Breville BOV450XL must not be placed near anything that might burn. Lastly, if the buyer receives a defective model, Breville is slow to replace it. The customer might have to wait a month or two to receive a replacement and pay to ship the defective oven back. For this reason you may want to look at brands like Cuisinart or Hamilton Beach when you look for your next toaster oven.
